MONTREAL -- Karla Homolka's bizarre prison relationship with convicted killer Jean-Paul Gerbet suggests she is a danger to reoffend, the lawyer for Homolka's teenage victims asserted yesterday.
"Her own expert is telling us this is a very serious concern," Toronto lawyer Tim Danson told Homolka's court bid to overturn a list of post-release conditions put on her after her July 5 prison release.
Lawyers for Homolka, 35, tried to convince Quebec Superior Court Judge James Brunton at an appeal in Montreal yesterday that there is not enough evidence to support a lower court finding that Homolka still poses a danger to reoffend and should remain under severe restrictions, even after serving her sentence in full.
Homolka, who spent 12 years in prison for her part in her then-husband Paul Bernardo's sex murders of teens Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French and the fatal drug rape of her own sister, seeks to overturn the restrictions.
Fellow prisoners told the Sun that Homolka is madly in love with Gerbet, plans to marry him one day and move to France with him, and at one point enjoyed sex with Gerbet through a gap in the prison fence.
It was heard yesterday, however, that Correctional Services Canada approached Homolka on two occasions and suggested that she end her relationship with the convicted killer.
