A notorious Edmonton high-risk sex offender on trial for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl confessed to the victim's grandmother, court heard yesterday.

"He said 'I am very sorry. I have done a very stupid thing. I have molested your granddaughter,' " said the woman, adding Ewanchuk was saying he was going to kill himself.

The grandmother testified she was shocked by the confession and couldn't sleep very well that night and became very upset when Ewanchuk called her again the next day.

She said she and her husband met Ewanchuk the following night and had a discussion about going to police and told court he tried to talk her out of it, saying, due to his past record, "he would never get out of jail."

The victim, who is now nine, testified Tuesday that Ewanchuk offered her toys and money for sex and assaulted her numerous times between July 2003 and July 2004.
